  • Obsolete computers in certain labs
  • Energy consumption for current computer is higher than average
  • Improper arrangement of wiring and computer placement causes waste of energy and heat build up
Problem solution
  • Replace obsolete computers with more efficient ones
  • Replace current computers with those that are up to date and based on performance per watt
  • Do proper wiring and place computers accordingly so that heat output in the lab can dissipate effectively
Objective
  • To reduce overall energy consumption for the university
  • To promote green computing and propose a framework for all institute and companies to comply
  • To promote Green Computing worldwide through this blog
Scope
  • Low power, high efficiency hardware

  • Efficient cabling and proper ventilation


Ethical issues
  • Could pose certain problems to companies that are not ready to produce environmental friendly computer parts in terms of money and R&D
  • Could cut jobs due to less maintenance needed
  • Could cause shift in material trading which could either benefit or crash the market

  • Virtualization
  • Wiring length and wiring method
  • Proper ventilation

For lab:

  1. PC Low End = [(RM1599 * 25) * 4] = RM159900
  2. PC Medium End = [(RM2431 * 25) * 8] = RM486200
  3. Switches for Each Lab = RM120 * 12 = RM1440
  4. Cabling 1m = RM1.50 / 300 PC at 2m each = RM900
